Canines have senses that far surpass those of humans. Their sense of smell is one hundred times that of ours and a canine can hear a heartbeat from across a room. This allows canines to clear a large amount of land in a very short time. In fact, one canine can clear the same area that it would take twenty humans to cover in the same amount of time. This makes them an excellent tool for search.

How Do Search Dogs Work?

The human body (live or deceased) is constantly emitting microscopic particles that contain bacteria which converts human protein into "scent". A search canine is not only trained to detect human scent, but is trained to find its highest concentration. To give a practical example, if you were to take one drop of human scent and place it in a swimming pool, a canine would still be able to detect it.
